Alte Sententiam is the wonderful bi-monthly paper that has been produced lovingly by its staff members since 2002. The Editor-in-Chief is Professor Cassandra Lobiesk, Ravenclaw's very own Deputy Head of House. According to her, “[Alte provides] entertainment, information, and a showcase of talented Ravenclaw writers and graphic-makers.” The staff writers and editors are all dedicated individuals who write, make puzzles or make graphics to share their passions with all of Ravenclaw and HOL.
There are ten main categories that work submitted to Alte can be found in. In these one can find the new pieces and by digging, the things from prior issues. There are some of these categories that are found in other house papers, but some are unique to Alte. There are advertisements, articles, columns, reviews, and fiction poems and stories (sometimes with graphics under “Showcase”). However, there is also a section called “Scientifics” that features science articles. These may range from being about planets to the proper way of making tea. There is also a Brain Challenge in every edition along with regular puzzles. Solving these is a daunting task, but it is worth it to try. After all, you may get beans for it!
As a staff writer for Alte, I know what it feels like from the perspective of someone who spends time looking around to find a topic on which to write. I have felt the exhilaration of seeing my article printed in the newspaper for all to read and then having people ask me about it on IRC. There are a lot of people that work hard to make the paper possible and being a person that writes, (and is therefore hounded about sending in articles when the deadline nears) I know the time that goes into making such wonderful (and always unique!) newspapers. But, everyone can recognize the beauty that can be found in the words and graphics of Alte Sententiam; staff or reader, Ravenclaw or not.
