Ravenclaw's Nests
by Maravillas Arrington
One of the first places I felt at home at in the Roost was in my Nest. Sorted by first names, Ravenclaw students are broken into four groups and placed in nests where they can play games, discuss homework, ask questions and make friends. The four nests are Terra (A-D,) Aer (E-K,) Ignis (L-R,) and Aqua (S-Z). Each group of Eagles has at least one Nest Mommy, which is the prefect/reserve prefects in charge. Being a First Year student can be quite overwhelming - as we all are well aware - and knowing just who you can go to for answers is very reassuring.
Before May of 2008, there were six nests in the Roost, each spearheaded by one prefect, and often named simply for the prefect in charge, ie; Tino, Saph, Hari, Sin, etc. The problem with this arrangement was that often, as we all fully know, real life gets in the way of our dear HOL time. Some prefects were coming and going sporadically, or sometimes simply having to fully quit HOL. For this reason, and also lighten up the workload for themselves and encourage more activity for students, a meeting was held between Ravenclaw Heads of House (Prof. Rhiannon Llewellyn and Prof. Ulol Kimil) and Prefects where it was decided that a four nest system would be optimal.
It was Rosanna Gullveig who suggested that these newly divided nests be named after the elements instead of simply known by the prefect in charge - just in case changes were to be made (and they have been, as recently as March 2010).
Along with the yearly Welcome Message and Introduction thread inside your nest, there is also a monthly Top Points Earners challenge. This is a nice way to recognize hard-working Eagles within the nest, and creates a sense of comradery among the smaller factions of Eagles. Not to mention, it's always a great thing to see your name at the top of the list!
Nests are your home away from home in the Roost, you could even liken it to a dorm off of a common room in Hogwarts. You may pop in and out of other nests as you would like- to visit, see who's playing what games (even join in yourself!) and overall, have fun. Terra seems to be having a ball trying to figure out an object by playing 20 Questions, Aer's being a little more mischievous with a game of Hurt or Heal, Aqua wants to know, "Does your computer have a name?" while Ignis Eagles are desperately trying to complete their 10/1 Challenges.
All in all, it's a wonderful thing to have as a Ravenclaw - a little nesting spot to settle into after a long day in the library.
